Spiced Savory Oats


Do you enjoy the health benefits of old-fashioned rolled oats?This whole grain is usually enjoyed as a sweet breakfast meal or dessert in Western regions of the world. In other cultures, oats have indefinite possibilities! Did you know that in India oats are enjoyed as a savory, nutritious porridge? From healthful cooked, warm vegetables to an array of health promoting spices such as digestive stimulant ginger and antioxidant-rich turmeric, this recipe will surely have something appetizing for every palate!

Serves 4


  • 1 cup oats

  • 2 cups kale

  • ½ cup carrots

  • ½ cup corn

  • ½ cup peas

  • 3 cups water


For Tempering:

  • 2 tbsp ghee

  • 2 tsp minced ginger

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp roasted cumin seed powder

  • 1 tsp coriander

  • 1 pinch asafoetida

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper to taste


Heat ghee in a pan and add a pinch of asafoetida, cumin seeds and minced ginger for 10-15 seconds. Add vegetables and saute for a couple of minutes. Add oats and remaining spices. Add water and cover the pan. Cook for 5 minutes or until oats absorb most of the water content. Serve and enjoy!
